OUR RANK: # 4
Firefighters Charitable Foundation was established to provide financial assistance to the people who have been affected by disaster or fire.
During the last decade, the professional solicitors of this company have been the biggest beneficiaries. From 2002 to 2011, the foundation raised $ 64 million in donations and paid $ 55 million of that to the solicitors. The foundation spent less than 10 cents of every dollar raised from its solicitors on direct financial assistance to the people in need.
The founder of the charity, Louis Pelico, left the organization in 2006. He said that he could not reduce fundraising costs. According to him he tried his best for many years to get down the fundraising cost. He further said in an interview that he thought if he couldn't get it down now then he is not going with it. It is like a double-edged sword that really cuts you beneath. First It helps you and then it cuts.
Frank Tepedino became the president of organization after Pelico. He told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinelin in 2007 that he thoroughly planned everything to change the way the organization raise funds. This has not occurred yet.
Today, the charity pays 90 cents of every dollar raised to its solicitors.
Part of this money goes to a broker who arranged the contracts between its telemarketers and Firefighters Charitable Foundation. The records show that the broker earns nearly 4 percent of all donations which are collected by telemarketers.
Some industry experts criticize that it is absurd for charities to use brokers. The lists of telemarketers is already available and using brokers simply wasting more money.
Tepedino said he is trying to raise funds from some other sources too, such as golf outings and fundraising dinners.
The purpose due to which this organization is formed and for which it should be exclusively managed administered and operated must administer, receive and expend funds for educational and charitable purposes within the framework of the following:
